An Insight Into Friendship Training
I found FT when my back was against the wall and I needed something more than the skills and knowledge gained in NH and traditional horse training methods. Michie was a mare with deep seated resentment towards people and an inclination to either shut down or rear and fight for her life. My basic instincts and personal approach did make a difference but I needed to reach her heart and her soul.
I began a long journey with Michie and discovered myself.
FT is not about “training” a horse. It is about establishing deeply rooted bond of love and respect. It is about learning how to be what your horse needs and wants and enabling you to teach your horse to survive in the domesticated world. It is about interspecies communication.
FT was developed by Chuck Minzlaff (Texas) and while many students have been happy to discontinue active learning after reaching a level suitable for their needs, I was the first student in 30 years to complete the programme. I have taken four horse/ponies through. After three further years training I am now his Associate, able to take on my own students. All my students have access to Chuck and his students with me. We are a family.
My own approach is one of mentor. I believe anyone who truly loves a horse will develop the skills and mindset to establish real two- way communication. People reading this probably have lovely well- established relationships with their horses. But FT may be of use in a future new relationship or a wonderful way to bring on a youngster or it maybe the way forward if you took on a challenging or abused horse.
I am not “selling” FT-only sharing my experiences and hoping you will share yours!
